Packers Wide Receiver Room Subject to Change Soon

The Green Bay Packers are closing in on training camp with a new look to the wide receiver room.

First-round pick Matthew Golden was a groundbreaking draft choice for the Packers. He’s expected to bring new life to a seemingly stagnant receiving room.

The Green and Gold has had an aggressive off-season, which is out of character compared to their Ted Thompson years.

Drafting Golden and Savion Williams, along with free-agency additions Nate Hobbs and Aaron Banks, could signal a new era starting in Green Bay. This is all led by the drive to bring another Lombardi to Titletown.

One step along the road is deciphering their wideout situation. Their roster stands at 13 receivers, and some believe there could be major changes before Week 1.

The Rookies

Green Bay’s wide receiver room has been built on a committee system in recent years, lacking the true strength of a WR1.

Taking Golden was a move that shook up the depth chart on its own. A new face that exudes the confidence and swagger of a new star.

When adding Savion Williams, the organization has made it clear that no one’s job is safe on the depth chart.

After all, why should they be?

The Packers have suffered with drop rates from their supposedly top receivers and crumbled under injuries in their fateful Wild Card. Both selections bring a high potential with their physical traits, and the college production to pique the curiosity of the fanbase.

Additionally, Green Bay’s history of finding talent in the low draft and free agency can’t go without notice. Any new face could bring an element of surprise to the table and potentially carve out a role.

As mentioned, the roster currently holds 13 receivers.

Sam Brown Jr. (UDFA), Romeo Doubs, Matthew Golden (R), Mecole Hardman, Malik Heath, Julian Hicks, Jadon Janke (R), Cornelius Johnson, Bo Melton, Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, and Savion Williams (R).

Brown Jr. caught passes from Cam Ward at Miami, and he’s the former teammate of Golden at Houston. At the time, he was the top receiver, ahead of the first-round pick.

Janke was also the college teammate of Tucker Kraft at South Dakota State University. Both of these small relations bring a level of wonder as to how they’ll perform alongside their former teammates.

It’s becoming a situation of too many cooks in the kitchen, and somebody safe last year is subject to a new location after the preseason.

Packers Wide Receiver Trade Talks?

ESPN insider Bill Barnwell has been stirring up talks about the Packers trading a receiver as soon as post-training camp.

“If Golden and Williams impress in training camp, teams will be calling the Packers to inquire about their young wideouts and whether any of them might shake available before the start of the season,” Barnwell said.

He mentioned that Romeo Doubs is a likely candidate, judging from his short suspension last season. While Doubs has had flashes of stardom, he lacks the consistency to keep him as a priority on the team.

In addition, Jayden Reed was considered the top receiver in Green Bay, but he will still have to compete for the role of WR1.

It’s worth noting that fringe guys like Wicks, Melton, and Heath could get lapped by the new faces, which could bring a trade.

While it’s important to consider depth, the wide receiver room can only fit so many faces. It’s likely to see a departure once Green Bay sees the talent they have.

Gear Up for a New Year

While there’s a bit of competition facing the team this preseason, it should only bring excitement that the organization is trying to build with fresh talent.

It’s been a tradition of Wisconsin sports to consistently win and retain their players while trying to avoid a losing season.

With Brian Gutekunst making big free agent signings and marking a new era for wide receivers, it’s exciting for fans to expect a new team.

No matter what happens in the preseason, the future is looking bright, and it’s feasible to think that Green Bay is nearing their championship form.
