Packers WR Sammy Watkins: 'I'm not there mentally' with Aaron Rodgers yet

The Green Bay Packers' efforts to replace Davante Adams haven't produced early returns. On Wednesday, quarterback Aaron Rodgers complained about the team's young group of receivers for their drops and poor route-running. Veteran free agent acquisition Sammy Watkins hasn't had the easiest time gelling with his new quarterback either.

"I feel like I have stacked good days on top of good days, but at the same time, I'm not there," Watkins said, via Packers.com. "I can't get complacent. I've still got to be humble, I've still got to understand that I'm not there mentally.

"Yeah, I can go out there and catch a ton of balls, but it's not about that. It's about doing the little things, the details the right way to where if a critical situation comes up, I'm going to do it right and make that play."

Watkins, 29, spent the 2021 season with the Baltimore Ravens, finishing the year with 27 receptions for 394 yards with one touchdown. Prior to that, Watkins had a three-year stint with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Buffalo Bills' former top five draft pick joined the Packers in April on a one-year, $4 million.

The Packers are expected rely on veterans Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard at receiver while working Watkins; rookies Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs and Samori Toure; and 2021 third-round pick Amari Rodgers into the mix.

Still, Rodgers told reporters Wednesday that running backs Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon may wind up with 50 receptions each.
