Panthers HC Dave Canales expresses interest in recruiting a new QB for the team despite having Bryce Young
Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Carolina Panthers are having quarterback problems. Not words you’d think of hearing considering the team just drafted Bryce Young a year ago. However, the team is at a crossroads with respect to the position of the third-string quarterback spot so that means Young is not the problem. Head coach Dave Canales currently has the sophomore QB and Andy Dalton to back him up in the QB room.

In a recent press conference, Canales addressed his interest in bringing a third QB aboard. As of today, Jack Plummer, an undrafted free agent from the University of Louisville is the third-stringer for the team.

What we always like to do is to add people, especially guys that have some kind of exposure to our system. I'm looking for value for the QB room, what do they bring for that room? For Bryce, in particular. Dave Canales said

Dave Canales likes what he sees from Plummer so far. Despite the rookie’s lack of experience, he seems to have his back.

The good part about Jack is I saw some accuracy, his ability to get up at the line, spit the plays out and all that. So, I'm excited about having him being just able to operate that way...but I certainly feel like we would still have our ears to the ground and see if there's anybody that might be interested in coming and being a part of what we're doing. Dave Canales added

The head coach is not going to turn away an opportunity to strengthen his QB room if a viable candidate comes his way.

Dave Canales is interested in bringing a veteran QB aboard

The head coach will have his eyes fixated on bringing veteran quarterbacks aboard. As of now, some prominent names on the free agent market are Ryan Tannehill, Brian Hoyer, and Trevor Siemian. The team should remain covered with Bryce Young, who has proven to be a durable quarterback in his rookie year and with Andy Dalton to back him up but it never hurts to be safe than sorry.

The Carolina Panthers had a disappointing record last season winning 2 games and losing 15. Dave Canales will have a rough task ahead of him as he intends to revamp the culture within the organization and rebuild the mentality in the locker room. He has been betting big on himself and has not shied away from being vocal about the Panthers making a resurgence in the forthcoming season.

As for Bryce Young, he had far from an ideal rookie year. He threw for 2,877 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions and had a disappointing QBR of 33.4. He ranked 29th in the league in terms of QBR. It was surprising to see this considering he was the first pick in the 2022-23 draft class. However, it was not all his fault as he had to play behind an inconsistent O-line and was put in the least ideal situation for a rookie.
