The Carolina Panthers are making an abrupt change just hours after their Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
The Panthers have fired defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, per multiple reports. The team opted to make the move heading into their bye week after a 27-19 defeat to the Packers on Thursday night.
Evero has interviewed for many head coaching jobs over the years and was a finalist for Las Vegas. Survived the Reich/Canales transition and a rebuilding roster. But Canales is using mini-bye for changes, and run defense had been a problem.

This marks a rather swift fall from grace for Evero. The Panthers considered him a big get when they hired him in 2023, and he has been viewed as a future head coach. He was a finalist for the Las Vegas Raiders job last offseason that ultimately went to Klint Kubiak.
The Panthers felt obligated to make a change amid their defensive struggles. They are 27th in points allowed and have particularly struggled to stop the run, giving up 4.8 yards per carry to opponents this season.
Evero should land on his feet, but for now, the Panthers are making significant changes. At 3-4, head coach Dave Canales might sweat his own future if things don’t pick up.
