The San Francisco 49ers might come to regret not promoting defensive lineman Trevis Gipson from the practice squad to the active roster. According to multiple reports, the Carolina Panthers are signing him to their 53-man roster.
Panthers are signing OLB Trevis Gipson off 49ers' practice squad, per league source.
Gipson (6-4, 263) has appeared in 4 games w/ SF this year. Had a 7-sack season in 2021 with Chicago, where he was a 5th-rd pick out of Tulsa in 2020.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed earlier this week that Gipson had exhausted his practice-squad elevations. That meant if the 49ers wanted him to suit up again, they would have needed to sign him to the active roster.
Gipson played 80 defensive snaps and 29 special teams snaps over four games this season, recording two tackles and a fumble recovery while providing valuable depth along a thin defensive front.
Ooof -- the 49ers used Gipson as one of their top two edge rushers (Sam Okuayinonu was the other) in Sunday's loss in Houston. Who plays that role in New York on Sunday? #Trade https://t.co/qEVWpZ77pB— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) October 28, 2025
Originally a fifth-round pick by the Chicago Bears out of Tulsa in 2020, Gipson enjoyed his most productive season in 2021, when he posted career highs with 39 tackles and seven sacks. Over six NFL seasons, he has tallied 11 total sacks.
San Francisco initially signed Gipson on August 11, and he was active this past weekend against the Houston Texans before being signed away by Carolina.
