The Carolina Panthers announced two significant roster decisions: defensive end Jadeveon Clowney has been cut, and running back Jonathon Brooks has been placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list.

Panthers Cut Jadeveon Clowney

The Panthers parted ways with one of their leading sack leaders in 2024.

Clowney, 32, entered the 2025 season on the second year of his two-year, $20 million contract. Clowney was set to count for $13.775 million against the 2025 salary cap.

In 2024, Clowney had 5.5 sacks, tied for first on the team alongside A’Shawn Robinson. However, that’s a sharp decrease from Clowney’s 9.5 sacks in 2023 as a member of the Baltimore Ravens.

The Panthers previously explored trade options for Clowney earlier this offseason. Ultimately, the Panthers released the former No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

While much of the Clowney decision came down to money, Carolina likely wanted to pave the way for free agent acquisition Pat Jones to see the field. Jones signed a two-year deal worth up to $20 million with the Panthers.

Jones had a career-high seven sacks with the Vikings in 2024.

This should not be the end of Clowney’s career. Every team is always looking for an edge rusher. Clowney could continue down the mercenary route and sign with the highest bidder.

Since joining the Seahawks in 2019, Clowney has played for five NFL teams.

Jonathon Brooks Put On PUP List

Unfortunately for Brooks, his season is over.

Brooks has been placed on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from an ACL injury, his second in 13 months.

Brooks will miss the entire 2025 season as he rehabs his right knee.

The Panthers drafted Brooks in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Brooks missed most of the season while recovering from a torn ACL in college.

In a sick twist of fate, Brooks suffered another season-ending ACL tear in the same right knee in Week 14.

The Panther backfield consists of Chubba Hubbard, Rico Dowdle, Trevor Etienne, and Raheem Blackshear.
