The Carolina Panthers have suffered another major setback less than a week into training camp.

Rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell II will undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee after seeking a second medical opinion, according to a league source. The decision essentially marks the end of his rookie campaign before his first meaningful snap

Carolina initially planned to treat Brazzell’s moderate LCL tear without surgery. That approach would have sidelined the third-round pick for roughly two months. However, doctors ultimately determined that an operation offers the best outcome for his long-term health.

Brazzell suffered the injury during Wednesday’s 7-on-7 period after becoming tangled with a defensive back and landing awkwardly on his left leg. He was carted off the field and later underwent additional evaluation.

Brazzell is now the second Panthers player set to forgo the 2026 season since training camp began.

Outside linebacker Nic Scourton tore his ACL during the team’s first practice and has already been placed on season-ending injured reserve.

As for Brazzell, the 6-foot-4 receiver entered camp with an opportunity to carve out a significant offensive role. Carolina selected Brazzell in the third round after he caught 62 passes for 1,017 yards and nine touchdowns at Tennessee during his final collegiate season. The Panthers believed his size, speed and ball skills could translate to success in the NFL.

Brazzell had been competing with Xavier Legette for the No. 3 receiver job behind Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker. With him now sidelined, veteran David Moore and offseason addition John Metchie III now have a clearer path to earning snaps alongside Legette.

The decision to undergo surgery will delay Brazzell’s development, but it also gives the 22-year-old the best chance to return at full strength next season. For Carolina, it marks another frustrating injury in what has already been a costly start to training camp.
