Patience is the Raiders’ plan in this coaching cycle

Although the Las Vegas Raiders were among the first teams to fire their head coach, they still have not hired a replacement. Several candidates have taken other jobs, including Jesse Minter with the Baltimore Ravens and Jeff Hafley with the Miami Dolphins. Las Vegas remains in search mode.

Klint Kubiak remains a leading target, but the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator is preparing for the conference championship. Losing to the Los Angeles Rams could pave the way for a more comprehensive interview. The Raiders also interviewed Brian Daboll on Saturday.

Mike McDaniel patiently waits for Raiders’ decision

The ex-Miami Dolphins head coach is now a candidate for the Raiders’ head coaching position. While he’s accepted the role of offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, his interest in Las Vegas persists. He has a reputation as an offensive innovator, and his personality is certainly larger than life.

Still, questions follow him. His scheme is productive, but his leadership has drawn criticism, and Miami’s locker-room situation deteriorated quickly. That has narrowed his head-coaching options.

While some in the league consider the Raiders’ head coaching position to be a challenging opportunity, McDaniel is thought to have an interest in it. Currently, Las Vegas seems to be concentrating on other candidates, leaving McDaniel’s prospects uncertain.

Davis Webb is still a candidate for head coach

NFL insider Ian Rapoport discussed the Raiders’ ideal scenario on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“In a perfect world, the Raiders would like a young offensive mind as their head coach,” Rapoport said. “Davis Webb would be a fit in Vegas.”

The word “young” matters. Webb is 30 and has played a prominent role in the development of Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. If Las Vegas drafts quarterback Fernando Mendoza, that background carries weight.

The timeline could become clearer after the conference championship games. If the Raiders do not make a hire soon, it may signal they are waiting for their top option to become available. Either way, they cannot afford to move too slowly. Other teams remain in the market and could take remaining candidates.
