Patrick Mahomes Development Emerges Immediately After Bills Loss

NFL Week 6 was full of significant performances, but Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen ended up on opposite sides of two of the most important ones.

Mahomes and the Chiefs hit their offensive stride at home in a 30-17 win over the Detroit Lions. The three-time Super Bowl champion went 22-of-30 passing for 257 yards and three touchdowns and added 32 rushing yards and a score.

Buffalo played the Atlanta Falcons in prime time on Monday night, and Allen could not match Mahomes' standout performance. He completed 15-of-26 passes for 180 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Bills were shut out in the second half as they lost their second game of the season, 24-14.

Coming into the weekend, Allen (+140) held the edge over Mahomes (+410) as the favorite in FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL MVP odds. By the time Allen had left the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the odds had swung in favor of the Chiefs star.

At time of publishing Monday night, Mahomes was the odds-on favorite to win his third MVP award at +200. Allen, who won his first MVP award last season, slid to +300 — favored slightly ahead of rising candidate Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield at +350.

As the odds suggest, Mahomes' individual numbers are superior to Allen's after six games. He has more passing yards (1,514 to 1,217) rushing yards (222 to 212) and total touchdowns (15 to 11) than his counterpart in Buffalo.

Mahomes' Chiefs have wobbled to a 3-3 record, but things are looking up. Coming off their best win of the season, the two-time MVP will get top wide receiver Rashee Rice back from suspension in Week 7, further boosting the Kansas City offense.

After back-to-back losses, the 4-2 Bills will get their bye week at a good time in Week 7. Their quarterback admitted he has plenty to work on beyond the statistics.

"I've got to be better," Allen said in his postgame press conference after the loss to the Falcons. "Protections, IDs, movement in the pocket. Just got to be better."

Allen's stock is at its lowest point so far in the season, but the reigning MVP will have a chance to defend his crown head-to-head with the new favorite when the Bills host the Chiefs in Week 9 on Nov. 2.
