Patrick Mahomes is well aware of the narratives surrounding the Chiefs and their unwillingness to call a quarterback sneak.
The Chiefs fell short to the Broncos on Sunday in the Mile High City despite having a few chances at the goal line in the final minute of regulation. Some fans said Andy Reid and his coaching staff lost because they’re unwilling to dial up a quarterback sneak. The Chiefs have stayed away from that play since Mahomes suffered a knee injury in October of 2019.
“Not sneaking the ball is the dumbest thing in the world,” Sports Illustrated reporter Matt Verderame said. “The guy got hurt on a freak accident SEVEN years ago. … The Chiefs just invent ways to beat themselves.”
Former Eagles coach Ryan Paganetti had a solution for the Chiefs if they’re afraid of getting Mahomes hurt. He thinks they should put Justin Fields in when they specifically dial up a quarterback sneak.
“Chiefs got to 2nd and goal at the 1 with three chances to win the game,” Paganetti wrote on X. “I know they want to protect Pat. I really think Justin Fields coming in for sneaks could be a package they can go to in these moments.”
While speaking to reporters Wednesday afternoon, Mahomes made it known that he’s not afraid to run a quarterback sneak.
“If I do call my number, I’ve got to make it work,” Mahomes said, via Nate Taylor. “I’m going to do whatever it takes to win. It’s not like I’m scared to not put my body on the line.”
Will we see the Chiefs call a quarterback sneak for Mahomes this weekend? We’re not sure, but the Jets should at least be on the lookout for it.
Kickoff for the Jets-Chiefs game is at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
