Patrick Mahomes Loses Major Award Before NFL Season

Through his eight seasons in the NFL, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already built a Hall of Fame caliber resume.

His list of accomplishments includes three Super Bowl wins, three Super Bowl MVPs, and two NFL MVP awards. Mahomes has also reached the AFC Championship Game every season since taking over for Alex Smith as Kansas City's starting quarterback in 2018.

But there is one award that Mahomes has been unable to secure, and this year was no different.

Over the weekend, Nickelodeon held its annual award show called the Kids' Choice Awards (KCAs), where kids get to choose their favorites in various categories. And, for the sixth time in his NFL career, Mahomes was nominated for the Favorite Male Sports Star award.

However, just like his previous five nominations, Mahomes did not win the Favorite Male Sports Star award. Instead, the honor was given to Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

Along with Mahomes and James, six other athletes were nominated for the award. Those include:

  • Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts
  • Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum
  • Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi
  • Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani
  • Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry
  • Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce

In 2024, Mahomes lost the award to Kelce, his teammate since 2017. The duo has made five Super Bowl appearances together.

LeBron, 40, is still playing at a high level despite nearing the tail end of his career. Although his Lakers didn't do much in the 2025 NBA Playoffs, falling in the first round, LeBron did help Team USA win another gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Kelce's girlfriend, singer Taylor Swift, also received some love in the 2025 KCAs, receiving a nomination for the Favorite Female Artist award. But, like Mahomes and Kelce, Swift did not win the award, going to SZA.
