The 2025 NFL season ended in devastating fashion for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs after the superstar quarterback suffered one of the most serious injuries of his career in mid-December.
Mahomes tore the ACL in his left knee during a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 14, when he was tackled from behind late in the fourth quarter while attempting to extend a drive. The injury was later confirmed by MRI and required surgery, immediately ending his season and raising questions about the start of the 2026 campaign.
The injury also marked a rare moment in Mahomes’ career. Mahomes had largely avoided extended absences since he was drafted in 2017, making this the first time in his nine-year career that he faces a prolonged stretch away from the field.
Since becoming the Chiefs’ starter in 2018, he has won two MVP awards, captured three Super Bowl titles and consistently led Kansas City to deep playoff runs.
Before his rise to NFL superstardom, however, Mahomes made his name in college with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Despite his busy NFL career, Mahomes has maintained strong ties with his alma mater.
On Wednesday, Texas Tech shared an update on its Mahomes memorabilia collection, revealing new photos of the quarterback’s jersey featured in various displays tied to the program’s history.
Mahomes acknowledged the update shortly afterward on his X account, reacting to the post with several fire emojis as he celebrated the tribute from the school where his football journey first gained national attention.

The quarterback played three seasons in Lubbock from 2014 to 2016, emerging as one of the most electrifying passers in college football. During his final season, he threw for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns while also adding 12 rushing scores.
As he continues working through his rehabilitation process, the Chiefs quarterback remains focused on returning to the field and leading Kansas City back into contention once the 2026 season begins.
