Patrick Mahomes Makes Demand After Chiefs’ Loss to Bills

The Kansas City Chiefs dropped to 5-4 on the season after their 28-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on at Highmark Stadium on Sunday. Games between the Chiefs and Bills seem to always follow a dramatic pattern, but the reasons for that go beyond the quarterback rivalry between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen that draws many NFL fans in.

On a wider scale, the outcome of recent matchups between the two AFC giants have either ended or tilted the trajectory of the losing team's season. Mahomes felt the weight of that pressure after Allen's historic performance put Buffalo in front and Kansas City's second half comeback effort fell short. Mahomes finished the game a career-worst 15-of-34 passing for 250 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

"We've got to learn from it," Mahomes said of the loss in his postgame press conference. After that cliched remark, he paused momentarily before turning to a reporter and changing his tone.

"But it's kind of like, we've got to do it now," Mahomes demanded urgently. "There's no easy game coming up and there's no more chances that we can really take losses. You've got to learn from it fast."

The three-time Super Bowl champion put the burden to improve on his own shoulders, stating specifically that the offense has to be better on "big drives" like the ones they failed to convert on against the Bills.

They got the ball twice in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter trailing 28-21. Those two drives resulted in a Mahomes interception and the end of regulation.

Loss to Bills Comes At Bad Time for Mahomes, Chiefs

The Bills' fifth consecutive regular season win against the Chiefs clearly stung Mahomes, but they will not have the opportunity to correct things on the field until after their Week 10 bye.

The loss officially dropped the Chiefs — who have made the AFC Championship Game in seven straight seasons with Mahomes as the starting quarterback — out of the AFC playoff picture entirely.

The Chiefs (5-4) are currently third in the AFC West division behind the Los Angeles Chargers (6-3) and the Denver Broncos (7-2), and they could lose more ground during their bye week.

This is the Chiefs' upcoming schedule in November, concluding with a Thanksgiving Day game in Dallas. Like Mahomes said, the margin for error is getting thinner.

  • Week 10: BYE
  • Week 11: at Broncos (7-2)
  • Week 12: vs Colts (7-2)
  • Week 13: at Cowboys (3-4-1)

It is not all doom and gloom for Kansas City, though. The off week will allow key contributors like running back Isiah Pacheco to get healthy. Losing by one score to a Super Bowl contender like the Bills did not loosen the Chiefs' dynastic chokehold on the AFC last season. If they respect Mahomes' demand and improve quickly, the narrative could shift back in their favor just as fast.
