Patrick Mahomes makes honest admission after Chiefs' latest loss

The Kansas City Chiefs turned in another uninspiring performance in their loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday night, and Patrick Mahomes is fully aware of what was at stake in the game.

It has been more than a decade since the Chiefs missed the playoffs, but they are now in 10th place in the AFC with just four games remaining in the season. Kansas City fell to 6-7 with their 20-10 loss to the Texans on "Sunday Night Football," which officially ended their chances of winning a 10th straight AFC West title.

Following the game, Mahomes admitted that it is "getting late in the season" for the Chiefs to make a playoff push.

"We know the chances are getting lower and lower, but I know the guys on this team are going to give everything they have every opportunity they get," Mahomes said, via Kevin Patra of NFL.com. "You're just getting late in the season, and you're not going to get these opportunities back. That's a good team, but we had chances. We didn't execute at the right time to win it."

Patrick Mahomes had a night to forget

Mahomes threw three interceptions on Sunday night, though they were not all his fault. Travis Kelce bobbled a pass that should have been caught when the Chiefs were trying to put together a game-tying drive late, and Houston came up with the pick on that play. There were several other passes that should have been caught but were dropped, which contributed to Mahomes completing a career-worst 42.4 percent of his passes.

Rashee Rice had a brutal drop on 4th-and-4 with 5:26 remaining in the game.

Mahomes completed just 14-of-33 passes for 160 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. He got little to no assistance from his receiving corps, however.

The Chiefs now need to win out and get some help in order to keep their streak of postseason appearances alive. The Indianapolis Colts are one team ahead of them in the standings, and starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffered what appeared to be a season-ending injury on Sunday. That should boost Kansas City's chances slightly, but you can understand why Mahomes sounded concerned after losing to Houston.
