Patrick Mahomes Never Had Notable Conversation With Travis Kelce

Travis Kelce has an undeniable connection with Patrick Mahomes on the gridiron, and yet, they elected to not have a very important conversation this offseason.

After the Kansas City Chiefs were dismantled by the Philadelphia Eagles, fans thought Kelce would retire from the NFL. There really isn't anything left for him to accomplish at this stage in his career. He's a three-time Super Bowl champion who'll undoubtedly be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

Kelce, however, announced that he'll return to the Chiefs for the 2025 season. He's hoping to avenge this past February's loss in Super Bowl LIX.

"I love playing. I still feel like I can play it at a high level and possibly at a higher level than I did last year," Kelce said. "I don't think it was my best outing. I think I let my guys down in a lot more moments than I helped them, especially if you look at my track record and how I've been in years past. I want to give it a good run. I got a bad taste in my mouth in how I ended last year and how well I was playing and how accountable I was to the people around me."

Even though retirement was a popular talking point for Kelce, he never discussed it with Mahomes.

Speaking to the media this Wednesday, Mahomes said he didn't have any conversations with Kelce regarding his playing status for 2025.

"We never talked about it," Mahomes said, via Arrowhead Pride. "I think you have that in the back of your mind - I mean, for anybody that’s played a lot of football seasons, there’s always a chance. You have to put in the work in the offseason. I think everybody wants to play in the games, but putting the work in the offseason [is] where stuff gets strenuous."

That's a bit surprising to us, especially since Kelce is Mahomes' go-to target. Perhaps he felt his best option was to give him space.

As for Kelce's 2025 outlook, Mahomes issued a warning to all 31 other teams.

"He's ready to go," Mahomes said. "He’s been putting in the work this offseason, and he’s excited for another chance to make a run at it."

The Chiefs will begin the season against the Los Angeles Chargers. That game will be played in Brazil.
