Patrick Mahomes is expected to play a significant role in the Kansas City Chiefs’ coaching overhaul this offseason. The two-time NFL MVP will not be the team’s final decision-maker when it comes to the major changes within Andy Reid’s coaching staff. However, the front office is expected to make its decisions with the ultimate objective of getting the best out of its cornerstone quarterback.
On Monday, news broke that the Chiefs are set to reunite with Eric Bieniemy as their new offensive coordinator. Matt Nagy is on his way out as he seeks a head coaching role with another team. The Chiefs are reportedly moving on, and Bieniemy is the next man up.
Bieniemy is now set to reunite with the Chiefs after three years away from the team. He served as the running backs coach under Reid from 2013 to 2017 before taking on the OC role from 2018 to 2022.
Bieniemy, a former NFL RB, spent the past three seasons with the Washington Commanders (assistant head coach and OC), the UCLA Bruins in the NCAA (assistant head coach and OC) and the Chicago Bears (RB coach).
Mahomes recently spoke to reporters for the first time since his season-ending knee injury. Apart from providing updates on his road to recovery, the two-time first-team All-Pro QB also shared his honest thoughts on the team’s OC situation.
Mahomes’ statement resurfaced on Tuesday, shortly after it was reported that Bieniemy would rejoin the team. Veteran Chiefs reporter Pete Sweeney of the Kansas City Star reposted Mahomes’ comments about what he’s looking for in the Chiefs’ next OC.
“I just want someone that loves football, that cares about football, wants to give everything they can to win, to hold people accountable, and then to bring new ideas every single day,” Mahomes told reporters in a Zoom interview on Thursday.
“That’s something that we have to continue to do if you want to continue to be great in this league, is you have to continue to evolve and get better and better and that’s something that we’ll try to do here and I want to get back to that winning culture of being accountable to each other and going out there and playing great football every single day, practice or game.”

Bieniemy fits the bill. More importantly, he has already worked with and succeeded alongside Mahomes and Co. The 56-year-old was part of two of Kansas City’s title runs. He was Reid’s OC when they won Super Bowl 54 in 2020 and Super Bowl 57 in 2023.
Bieniemy will now be hoping to play a key role in another championship run with Mahomes and the Chiefs.
