Patrick Mahomes stunned Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy hasn't been hired as HC

For the second year in a row, Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy did not receive a head coaching job and nobody is more surprised than Patrick Mahomes, as the Kansas City quarterback said he was shocked that Bieniemy did not receive an offer this time around.

"It amazes me, honestly," Mahomes said on "The Dan Patrick Show" (via the New York Post's Greg Joyce). "The first year, you kind of were like, 'All right, it's just his first cycle through.' Then last year, the interviews, you're like, 'For sure he's gonna get a job.' Then this year."

In terms of qualifications, it's hard to find anyone with a stronger resume than Bieniemy, as he has been the Chiefs' offensive coordinator since 2018 and has helped engineer one of the most potent offensive attacks in NFL history. And this jaw-dropping offense, led by Mahomes, has gotten the Chiefs to their second straight Super Bowl, giving Kansas City the chance to be the first team to repeat as champions since the New England Patriots in 2003-04.

Bieniemy interviewed with several teams during this most recent cycle but was ultimately passed up in favor of several other coaches. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid seemed just as confused by Bieniemy's lack of job offers as Mahomes was, saying he fully expected his coordinator to get a chance to be an NFL head coach for the first time in his career.

"I'm glad I have him, but I'm not so glad I have him," Reid said, per USA Today's Nancy Armour. "I was really hoping he would have an opportunity to take one of these jobs."
