Patriots defensive standout sidelined with blood clot issue

The New England Patriots are going to be without one of their best defensive players for an unknown period of time.

The team announced on Sunday that defensive standout Christian Barmore, one of their top defensive lineman, was diagnosed with blood clots over the weekend. The Patriots went on to say that Barmore was treated but they have no immediate timetable on when he can or will return to the field.

Barmore was a second-round pick by the Patriots (No. 38 overall) in the 2021 NFL Draft and has gradually seen his role increase within the defense.

He started six games for the Patriots in 2023, while appearing in all 17 games, and recorded a career-high 8.5 sacks. That number not only led the team, but it was four more than any other player on the roster.

The Patriots defense was the one bright spot during a brutal four-win season in 2023, and the emergence of Barmore was a key part of that. If he has to miss extended time — and it is probably a good bet that he will given how concerning blood clots are — that would be a significant issue for their defensive front and their pass rush.

The defense is going to have to be the focal point again this season as the Patriots still lack playmakers on offense and are likely to have a rookie quarterback in Drake Maye leading the team. Points should again be an issue.
