Patriots Make Decision on Veteran Offensive Lineman

The New England Patriots signed offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer to a one-year, $1.55 million contract three months ago in the hopes that he would not only add depth to the position (and potentially compete for the starting job at left guard), but also serve as a veteran presence in the locker room.

It appears that Schweitzer's contributions with the organization will be limited to just the offseason, as the Patriots placed him on the reserve/retired list on Tuesday.

Schweitzer signed with the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent after spending the previous two seasons with the New York Jets. Both campaigns were riddled with injuries, as Schweitzer appeared in 10 of the Jets' 34 regular season contests during that span, starting in just two of them.

Schweitzer also had stints with the Washington Commanders (2020-2022) and Atlanta Falcons (2016-2019) over the course of his nine-year NFL career. He is credited with 90 appearances and 62 starts, many of which came early in his time as a professional. Schweitzer was the Falcons' starting right guard during his sophomore campaign, appearing with the first unit in all 16 of the team's regular season games.

Schweitzer was originally a sixth-round pick (No. 195 overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft after playing five years of college football at San Jose State. While with the Spartans, Schweitzer started all 37 games of his redshirt sophomore, junior and senior seasons, including the team's win over Georgie State in the 2015 Cure Bowl. He picked up All-Mountain West Conference Second Team honors that same season.
