Patriots’ Mike Vrabel shares disappointing Carlton Davis injury update

While New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel still deals with the aftermath of the Dianna Russini situation, he also saw key injuries in the secondary. And then Vrabel had to share the disappointing Carlton Davis injury update.

But it wasn’t the worst news that injuries can sometimes bring, according to NBC Sports.

“The Patriots have been practicing without cornerback Carlton Davis for over a week, and head coach Mike Vrabel said Davis is going to miss even more time before he’s well enough to return,” Josh Alper wrote. “Vrabel said on Friday, via multiple reporters, that Davis will be out for at least another week. Davis injured his hamstring and last practiced on July 28.”

Davis started all of the Patriots games in 2025. The eight-year veteran totaled 69 tackles and defended 10 passes. He also added three tackles for loss, tying his career high.

Patriots have to adjust on the fly

Vrabel said the situation with Davis gives the team an opportunity that otherwise might not be available. And it’s in the development of the coaching staff, according to patriots.com.

“I don’t anticipate seeing [Davis] with the joint practices with the Colts or available for that game,” Vrabel said. “But staying engaged, and this is why you love to develop young coaches on your staff. So, let’s say, for example, Justin [Hamilton]’s meeting with the corners in the morning as they get ready for practice, and we know that CD’s not going to be up for that day of practice. Kevin Richardson can take him into the mobile classroom and go through a specific script and plays and cater to exactly the things that CD needs, so that again, he can stay engaged while he’s not in.

“I’ve always told you, it’s hard to be out dealing with something and then install new installations going in, but you’re not getting to rep it physically. So, we’re trying to just keep him engaged. And he is. And I’m excited that we have good young coaches that can do that while the other coaches are taking the rest of the group.”
