Patriots’ potential 2026 breakout star after strong OTAs showing

The New England Patriots made it all the way to Super Bowl 60 last season. They did so after Drake Maye took an MVP leap. Maye didn’t even start his rookie season as the team’s starting quarterback, but by year two, he finished just one first-place vote shy of winning MVP honors over Matthew Stafford. Maye was far from the only player to develop in a big way last season for the Patriots, though. So, with organized team activities underway, who could be the next Patriots player who could break out, perhaps even enough to help the team take the next step and win the whole thing?

Kayshon Boutte is the Patriots’ next breakout candidate

Obviously, the Patriots live and die by the success of their young quarterback. A big reason for Maye’s development last season was the addition of Stefon Diggs. The receiver, who had previously played for the Minnesota Vikings, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans, ended up leading the Patriots in receptions (85) and receiving yards (1,013). Diggs is a premier route runner with excellent hands who has had his fair share of big moments over his career.

Despite how important Diggs proved to be toward New England’s success, the Patriots decided to release the veteran receiver after just one season with the team, creating a newfound hole in the pass-catching department. While Maye is now established as a star, he is still a young player who needs all the help he can get, so the decision to move on from Diggs came as a surprise to many.

The Patriots tried to fill this void by signing Romeo Doubs in free agency, but the receiving corps as a whole is still underwhelming at first glance. That is, unless Kayshon Boutte breaks out and reaches his potential. Boutte was once viewed as a potential first-round pick during his days at LSU, but off-the-field issues and an underwhelming final season in college resulted in him falling all the way to round six in 2023.

He has flashed his first-round potential during his time with the Patriots, though. In 2024, the LSU product had 43 catches for 589 yards. His numbers regressed somewhat in 2025, but Boutte still had six touchdowns, illustrating his big-play ability. In 2026, Maye may become much more reliant on the still-developing pass catcher.

Boutte is incredibly gifted as an athlete. He can win 50/50 balls, which explains his red zone success, and he also thrives in yards after catch situations. The receiver has the speed, route-running prowess, and vision to excel in all three levels of the field, which makes him a great fit in a Maye-led offense. The quarterback was drafted largely because of his killer arm strength, but he took what defenses gave him last season. Boutte could get open all over the field for his quarterback.

The Patriots wouldn’t have cut Diggs if they didn’t have a plan to replace him. Perhaps their belief in Boutte was enough to think he could take over as the team’s top receiving threat in the upcoming season and for years to come. With the development trajectory that Boutte is on, and given the potential for opportunity in New England’s offense, it seems likely that Boutte will be the Patriots’ biggest breakout player this season. If Boutte doesn’t continue to improve, the Patriots’ offense very well may see regression.
