New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is entering the 2026 offseason hoping to replicate what was a remarkable 2025 campaign that firmly established him among the NFL’s elite young quarterbacks.

In his second season, Maye completed 354 of 492 passes for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, finishing with a league-leading 113.5 passer rating while also posting a 72.0% completion rate and 8.9 yards per attempt. He added 450 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns, helping guide New England to a 13-4 record and one of the best seasons in franchise history.

Maye’s outstanding play carried the Patriots through the AFC playoffs and into Super Bowl LX, where they ultimately fell 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks.

Following the Patriots’ impressive postseason run, however, the team made a surprising decision that created a major hole in the receiving corps. New England released veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who had been Maye’s top target during the 2025 season. Diggs finished the year with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards, leading the team in both categories while playing a key role in their run to the Super Bowl.

With Diggs gone, the Patriots were immediately linked to several potential wide receiver targets. Reports indicated the team explored trade possibilities for Philadelphia Eagles star AJ Brown, while also emerging as one of the clubs showing interest in Indianapolis Colts free agent Alec Pierce, according to The Athletic’s Diana Russini.

Unfortunately for New England, they appear set to miss out on one of the top receivers available. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Pierce has agreed to remain with the Indianapolis Colts on a historic four-year, $114 million contract that makes him the highest-paid free-agent wide receiver in NFL history.

The deal includes $84 million in guarantees, $60 million fully guaranteed at signing, and a maximum value of $116 million.

It’s a significant blow for Maye and the Patriots, who were hoping to add one of the league’s most promising young receivers to replace Diggs and give their star quarterback another elite weapon.

While the Patriots continue to be linked to Brown, the Eagleshave reportedly remained firm on their asking price in trade discussions, according to Russini, making a deal far from certain.

New England’s front office will now continue searching for solutions as it looks to strengthen the receiving group and ensure Maye has the supporting cast necessary to build on his breakout season before the start of the 2026 NFL season.
