A New England Patriots team that has 2025 Most Valuable Player Award finalist Drake Maye serving as its starting quarterback took a flier on Texas Tech signal-caller Behren Morton when it made him a seventh-round selection during the 2026 NFL Draft.
After learning that he would be joining the Patriots, Morton made it known that he is willing to go the extra mile to help his new teammate out.
"I’m really looking forward to picking his brain about what he’s done in the league so far," Morton said about Maye, per Chris Mason of MassLive. "He’s been very successful this last year. So I’m going to do whatever it takes. If he needs a coffee from Starbucks, I’m there for Drake. Whatever he needs throughout this process, I’m here for him."
Of course, Maye has no reason to look over his shoulder now that Morton is part of a roster that also features backup Tommy DeVito. Maye is comfortably cemented atop New England's depth chart as the club's QB1 after he guided the club to the Super Bowl this past February. Morton is merely an interesting project who wants to help the Patriots in any way he can as a rookie.
"I’m fired up to be there," Morton added about being drafted by the Patriots. "I’m a competitor. I’m going to elevate the room for sure. And I’m going to do whatever it takes to make this organization better."
As Mason explained, Maye and Morton were in the same high school recruiting class and attended the Elite 11 quarterback competition together back in 2020.
"We were Elite 11 finalists," Morton said about being familiar with Maye. "We went to Tennessee. I got to know him there. He’s a great dude. He’s a young guy that I can learn from. Obviously had a tremendous season last year. So getting to learn from him this year, and also Tommy DeVito, this is going to be a great opportunity for me, and I’m really excited about it."
Ideally, Morton won't take a meaningful snap for the Patriots anytime soon. That said, he could emerge as Maye's primary backup if he is allowed to compete for that job in the summer of 2027.
