With their 10-7 victory over the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game, the New England Patriots are on their way to the franchise’s 12thSuper Bowl appearance. That’s four more than any other team. If the Patriots win Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, they would break a tie with the Pittsburgh Steelers with their seventh Super Bowl victory.
The Steelers had already won four Super Bowls before the Patriots reached their first Super Bowl 40 years ago. New England lost the game badly to the Chicago Bears, , then lost to the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXVI. Since then, the Patriots have won six of their nine Super Bowl appearances, all with head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady.
Three of those Super Bowls featured Mike Vrabel at linebacker. Now, the Patriots’ first-year head coach can become the third person to win the Super Bowl as both a player and a head coach — joining Tom Flores and Mike Ditka in that elite fraternity.
The Patriots are one of just nine franchises that have been to at least five Super Bowls and have a winning record in those games. A loss in Super Bowl LX would drop the Patriots to 6-6 in the big game and take them off that list.
