The New England Patriots' offense will look different in 2025 as offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has returned to New England after spending a couple of seasons as a head coach with the Las Vegas Raiders.
One of the many words used to describe McDaniels' offense is complex. The talented offensive coordinator had one of the smartest quarterbacks in Tom Brady at the helm for his previous stint in New England and found great success.
New Patriots' receiver Stefon Diggs recently detailed the complexities of McDaniels' offensive schemes on his YouTube channel, as he documented his preparation and training throughout the offseason.
“I’m studying, but it’s really the route concepts, like basically, if you hear a word, you need to be able to know the word immediately, know the concept. So really, I’m just working on my memorization," Diggs said. "I got the formation, but I need to know the concept. I don’t need to know exactly just what I got, I need to know what somebody to the right or to the left of me got—so what everybody got around me, how I’m going to get open or how I’m going to get somebody else open.”
Diggs is in the process of recovering from a torn ACL and is on a new team entering 2025. The veteran receiver will also be leaned on as a leader for a relatively young group of receivers and second-year quarterback Drake Maye this season.

The Patriots' new weapon elaborated on McDaniels' schemes, mentioning that as a receiver, you need to be able to process everything within seconds of breaking the huddle to the point that it becomes second nature. Diggs' attention to detail this offseason in getting comfortable with his new offensive coordinator's schemes will be pivotal in not only his success, but his teammates around him.
The good news for Diggs and the Patriots is that the star receiver is trending toward being able to play in week one. There's a lot of expectation around the Patriots' and Maye's development in 2025, and McDaniels' playbook could be a learning curve for New England's young receivers. A strong grasp of it from Diggs and the ability to be a second teacher on the field will be a big boost for the Patriots.
