Smith's injury occurred during a one-on-one drill early in practice. The Patriots trainer examined him before heading to the locker room.
New England signed the top two free-agent tight ends available this summer in Smith and Hunter Henry. Both have suffered injuries during training camp, with Henry missing two practices and the Patriots' first preseason game with a shoulder injury.
Smith signed a four-year $50 million contract with the Patriots after four seasons with the Tennessee Titans. The 25-year-old caught 41 passes for 448 yards and eight touchdowns in 15 games last season.
Henry, meanwhile, signed a three-year, $37.5 million contract with the Patriots after five seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Patriots won their first preseason game against the Washington Football Team 22-13. They will take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday before playing their final preseason game against the New York Giants.
