To put it simply, the Detroit Lions put on a blocking clinic in Week 3 against the Baltimore Ravens. The run game was rolling, as Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery combined for 218 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, and Jared Goff was not sacked. In fact, Goff was only hit three times in the game according to Pro Football Focus.
Three of the Lions' offensive lineman, right tackle Penei Sewell, left tackle Taylor Decker and right guard Tate Ratledge, posted overall PFF grades of at least 82.9 with Sewell and Ratledge topping 90.0. Four of the five, with left guard Christian Mahogany joining the initial trio, registered at least a 71.5 run blocking grade.
On the pass blocking grade front, center Graham Glasgow replaced Mahogany to give the Lions four of five lineman with a mark of at least 68.5.
Sewell is now PFF's highest-graded offensive tackle through three weeks this season, with a 92.1 overall grade. He's also nearly 10 points higher than No. 2 Kolton Miller (82.6 overall grade), matching the margin between Miller and the 14th-highest graded offensive tackle.
That kind of air is of course nothing new for Sewell. He has been a top-10 graded offensive tackle by PFF each of the last three full seasons, including a No. 1 finish in 2023.
In just the game against the Ravens, Sewell earned a 98.7 overall PFF grade and a 99.3 run blocking grade. It's basically impossible for a player to earn a perfect 100.0 grade in any category of their performance, so Sewell's 99.3 run blocking grade is certainly one of the best marks ever registered by any player at any applicable position.
Via Jeff Risdon of Lions Wire, who went right to the source (Trevor Sikkema of PFF), Sewell's 99.3 mark is the highest single-game run blocking grade ever given since Pro Football Focus started evaluating and grading every snap for every player in 2006.
Going further, per Risdon, Sewell's 98.7 overall grade against the Ravens is also the highest single-game mark for any offensive lineman in at least the last four seasons.
Sometimes, PFF grades and the eye test don't completely match. But Sewell was noticeably dominant in every facet against the Ravens (one pressure allowed on 30 pass rush snaps), and with that it's not shocking to find out his performance earned a couple record-setting grades.
