Pete Prisco of CBS Sports released his Mock Draft 2.0, and with it, he has the Dolphins selecting these two players in Round 1.

Round 1, Pick #11: Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee

“He is coming off a torn ACL, but he is back running and should be ready for the season. They have a messy corner room, so they need a guy who can step in and give them a true No. 1 corner.”

NFL.com Draft Profile

Overview

McCoy is a toolsy outside corner with CB1 flashes, but an ACL tear robbed him of a much-needed third season. Hips and feet are smooth, allowing for quality lateral transitions and efficient gathers to match hard-breaking curls. He’s athletic in his recoveries but average acceleration leaves him chasing too often on go routes. More focused, physical press disruption should make the rep easier to control. He’s opportunistic with strong ball skills at the catch point. His route squeeze and zone awareness should improve with more reps. We should expect McCoy’s athletic traits and instincts to help him make up for lost time once he gets into camp.

Strengths

  • Former triple- and long-jumper with explosive lowers.
  • Posted 16 passes defensed, including six interceptions, from 2023 to 2024.
  • Patient in the early phases, allowing receivers to declare before opening.
  • Quick, confident feet can match release and recover when beaten.
  • Oily hips create fluid movement and change of direction in space.
  • Has the size to become more imposing underneath.
  • Shows ability to gather and redirect when matching comebacks.
  • Doesn’t guard grass and will look to overlap in zone coverages.
  • Engulfs wideouts at catch point for fast finishes or pass breakups.

Weaknesses

  • Struggles to stay in phase against speedy route benders.
  • Loses poise and will grab when the rep becomes challenging.
  • Needs better physicality to suffocate work space on verticals.
  • Displays some indecision on zone switch-offs.
  • More drag-down tackler than full-body hitter.
  • Missed 2025 season with ACL tear.

Round 1, Pick #30: Dillon Thieneman, Safety, Oregon

“They get a corner with their first pick and follow that up with a rangy safety. Thieneman will excel in their scheme with his range. Receiver is in play here too.”

NFL.com Draft Profile

Overview

Savvy three-year starter with NFL size, speed and alignment versatility. Thieneman is an extension of his defensive coordinator, aligning and adjusting the secondary to motion and pre-snap shifts. He’s an instinctive, rangy safety who can roll down into big nickel or robber positioning. He has a good feel for play design and route concepts in zone but has average change of direction to match breaks in man. He’s not a big thumper near the line, but he rushes into the action with a relentless pursuit that should allow him to keep stacking high scores in the tackle columns. Thieneman checks important boxes for teams looking to add versatile playmakers in the secondary.

Strengths

  • Rare production (306 tackles, eight interceptions) in his three seasons.
  • Size/athleticism combination to play all three safety positions.
  • High coverage IQ with a strong feel for spacing and route structure.
  • Range and ball-tracking ability to play over the top.
  • Rarely takes eyes off the quarterback for extended periods of time.
  • Persistent pursuit of the football keeps him near the action.
  • Reads run and races downhill to squeeze work space for ball-carriers.
  • Recognizes run track and bolts to the junction point ready to meet the runner.

Weaknesses

  • Man coverage begins to show cracks as the route progresses.
  • Average short space change-of-direction quickness.
  • Step slow to adjust his pursuit angles to the perimeter.
  • Needs better hand usage to stack and play off blocks.
  • Full speed alley running leads to greater hit/miss variability.
  • Average stopping power when bringing down bigger bodies.
