Third-year offensive lineman Tyler Steen is set to step into the Philadelphia Eagles' starting right guard job with Mekhi Becton no longer in the picture.
There has been some concern surrounding Steen's name, considering what happened last offseason when he was in line to earn the starting spot at right guard but lost the camp battle to Becton.
However, according to Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter, Steen is more than ready this time around.
“We’re getting each other better every day,” Carter told reporters following training camp practice. “He’s a helluva player. I believe he is ready.”
Steen, 24, was originally a third-round pick (65th overall) out of Alabama by the Birds in the 2023 NFL Draft. Since then, he's appeared in 28 games with three starts. Last fall, he made two regular-season starts and started at left guard in the NFC Championship Game win over the Washington Commanders.
With the right guard job being Steen's to lose in early August, he's been improving daily while winning battles against some of his toughest teammates, which is something that has not gone unnoticed by offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.
“I think really you just look at his body of work as he's grown from the last couple years until now,” Patullo said of Steen. “And then obviously on Friday, going against Jalen Carter, going against Jordan Davis, you can really see his intensity ramp up, and the want-to and the attitude and just the decision making he has at certain calls he needs to make and the communications really growing, so you can see him in practice. We're going against a pretty good D-line, so I think that's really benefited him.”
We'll catch a better glimpse at Steen's progress when the Eagles play their first preseason matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday, August 7.
