The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in an interesting spot heading into June. They have navigated the aftershock of the George Pickens trade but have yet to learn a decision from quarterback Aaron Rodgers on whether or not he will play for the team next season.
Pittsburgh is still reportedly shopping for additional playmakers. Gabe Davis visited with the team this week and the Steelers have continued their talks with the Miami Dolphins regarding a trade for tight end Jonnu Smith.
This level of uncertainty with some key positions on the roster is quite unusual for a team at this point in the offseason. Head coach Mike Tomlin has never posted a losing season in his time with the Steelers, but the odds appear stacked against him in 2025.
However, one would not gather such fears from the mentality one NFL insider believes the team is operating with. NFL media's Ian Rapoport appeared on "The Pat McAfee Show" this week, revealing that the team is "loading up" for "one more run."
"The feeling I get from the Steelers is kind of loading up... Doing all the resources, all the spots, everything you can. Obviously there could be a quarterback there at some point, hopefully soon. Maybe before the end of the summer. But that's what it feels like. Kind of loading up to make one more run at it."
We find this take - assuming it's the Steelers' view - as shocking.
And here's why ...
The Steelers have the pieces to be competitive this year though they are a far cry from being viewed as a contender. So... what exactly are they "running back?"
Pittsburgh's most veteran core players are on the defensive side. Cam Heyward will retire after this season and Watt has one year left on his current deal. Offensively, there is no quarterback direction besides a likely one-year installment of Mason Rudolph. Elsewhere, there are new faces playing key roles at the skilled position spots.
Perhaps that means one more year under Tomlin though any speculation of his job status at this point would be pretty premature.
Right now, the Steelers and their fans are still waiting on answers for some pressing questions. Until those come around, it's hard to put a finger on both who engineering this run and also what they would accomplish with one more run.
