The Chargers were able to put on a dominant performance for most of the game in Houston this week. With a lot of “next man up” players filling in for superstars and future Hall of Famers, they came away with a 34-24 victory. Here are the Players of the Week for the week four victory on the road:

Offensive Players of the Week:

Winner: Austin Ekeler

Austin Ekeler got off to a slow start in 2022 posting a horrific 2.5 yards per carry with zero touchdowns. During the Sunday road game, Ekeler average 4.6 yards per carry for 60 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. He also caught six passes for 49 yards and a third touchdown totaling three touchdowns on the day. The team relearned something valuable against the Texans, that is that you need to feed your play makers the ball, Ekeler is one of the most prolific ones on the offense.

Runner Up: Justin Herbert:

Herbert put on a a show in Houston on Sunday afternoon. He was able to complete 69% of his passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns. This marked his seventh straight road game with 300 or more yards. While it seems like Herbert is running out of records to break, this is the second longest streak in NFL history. Rich Gannon posted eight in such games across the 2001-2022 seasons.

Defensive Players of the Week:

Winner: Bryce Callahan

Bryce Callahan continues to prove why he is still a top rated nickel corner in the league. A key piece of the Charger’s secondary, Callahan played on 65% of the teams defensive snaps. The former Bronco’s defensive back allowed zero catches on the day, with two pass deflections and an interception that helped seal the victory.

Runner Up: Derwin James Jr.

Derwin James was a matchup nightmare against opposing Wide Receivers on Sunday. James was targeted six times only giving up three catches for three yards. The All-Pro Safety also tallied up six tackles and two pass deflections on the day. James continues to prove that his ability to play all over the field makes him nearly impossible to game plan against for opposing offenses.

Special Teams Player of the Week:

Winner: JK Scott

There has yet to be another great spotlight player on this Chargers Special Teams unit. JK Scott has been a bright spot as he continues to put the Chargers defense in great position when he steps on the field. Scott punted the ball four times and averaged 46.5 yards per punt against Houston. Three of Scott’s punts landed the Texans inside their own 20 yard line

Runner Up: Dustin Hopkins

Hopkins connected on both field goal attempts Sunday, one from 37 yards and one from 23 yards. He also connected on all four extra point tries bringing ten total points to the Charger’s side of the scoreboard.
