FRISCO - Jerry Jones' monologue with Dallas Cowboys fans started almost 12 months ago with "all in'' ... and as always, the monologue never stopped.
Of course, over the course of 2024 we learned that the most all-in thing Jerry was going to do was be all-in on more monologuing.
The Cowboys owner has since 1989 been about what I've entertainingly called "Chicken-Fried Little Rock Door-to-Door Huckster Jibber-Jabber Word Salad.''
"Jocks and socks'' was the 1989 version of "all in.'' And so have a "skillion'' (one of Jerry's many wacky pet words) other phrases over the course of 35 years.
But there was one major difference this season in Jerry's presentation ...
Did he ever suggest his Cowboys might go to the Super Bowl? Did he ever even utter the words "Super Bowl'' at all?
The Cowboys’ Super Bowl drought is about to hit 30 years. But for the better part of 35 years, a Cowboys Super Bowl has always been the spoken goal and the measuring stick.
But now? This year?
“I always hide from the fact that it bothers me,” Jones said on Sunday night about that infamous 30-year distinction.
But, he added, “I like to look at the fact that over the last 15 to 20 years, we’re the sixth-winningest team in the NFL. I like that!''
In fairness, during part of this 50-minute conversation following a Week 18 loss that ended Dallas' year at 7-10, Jones did say the magic two words. But there is no doubt that his previous brashness, at least, regarding The Big Game as the goal ...
Is gone.
"You can’t win Super Bowls,'' he said, "unless you’re one of the winningest teams in the NFL, and we have been for the last 15 to 20 years ...''
The reason this is Jerry's Worst Quote of the Year - way more damaging and misleading even than "all in'' - is because it is categorically untrue.
In the last 20 years, the Cowboys’ .574 winning percentage is eighth in the NFL.
That's not bad. But it's not "sixth.'' And it's not a Super Bowl.
In the last 15 years, the Cowboys’ .553 winning percentage is ninth in the NFL.
That's not bad. But it's not "sixth.'' And it's not a Super Bowl.
So pretending that the numbers are positive by inflating them? And forgetting the way it used to be, when the words "Super Bowl'' were sometimes the only part of a Jerry sentence I could make out clearly?
Maybe the scariest thing here is that it reinforces my slogan about this franchise: "Sometimes it seems like Jerry's Cowboys are a marketing company that plays football on the side.''
Altogether ... That's what makes “I like to look at the fact that over the last 15 to 20 years, we’re the sixth-winningest team in the NFL. I like that!'' Jerry's Worst Quote of the Year.
And maybe his Worst Quote Ever.
