QB Jake Dolegala re-signing with Packers

The Green Bay Packers needed some quarterback depth with backup Jordan Love dealing with a shoulder injury and starter Aaron Rodgers not playing in preseason games to remain healthy for the start of the regular season next month.

Green Bay is bringing a familiar face back.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky reports the Packers are re-signing Jake Dolegala ahead of Saturday's exhibition contest against the New York Jets. The product of the Central Connecticut Blue Devils first joined the Packers in June when Rodgers was remaining away from the team amid reports he wished to be traded, but Green Bay released Dolegala after the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player reported to training camp last month.

Dolegala briefly returned to the New England Patriots, where he spent time on the practice squad last year, but was released earlier this month. The Cincinnati Bengals signed Dolegala as an undrafted free agent in 2019, but the 24-year-old hasn't yet thrown a pass in a regular-season NFL game.

If Love is unable to play or is rested this weekend, Kurt Benkert would likely start under center for Green Bay.
