As the NFL season winds down, things are starting to fall into place. Only three weeks remain in the NFL’s regular season. Teams are beginning to show their true identity. It is becoming clearer who is a real Super Bowl contender and who isn’t. Unfortunately, another NFL season has come and gone, but the playoffs will be fun to watch. Don’t take these games for granted. We will be yearning for a garbage Thursday night game in June.
Don’t get it twisted, Joe Burrow coming back this season was the correct decision, but unfortunately, the Cincinnati Bengals were never going to make noise in the AFC North. They are 1-2 since his return, falling to 4-10. They are dead in the division. They had to run the gauntlet to have life. Now, Joe Burrow is talking about not having fun amid speculation on where his future will be. What a mess. The Bengals don’t deserve him.
The Houston Texans started the season on the wrong foot, but now they have won six straight games with a seventh on the way. Their offense has room for improvement, but the defense is on another level right now. DeMeco Ryans’ team is scorching hot at the perfect time. That defense can win playoff games for them. They are chasing the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC South, and they are on their tail.
The Buffalo Bills are back in the contender category. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are officially eliminated from playoff contention, and that gives Josh Allen a path to his first Super Bowl. The boogeyman is gone. The AFC is wide open. Buffalo has stacked three straight wins, including a 21-point comeback against the New England Patriots to stay alive in the AFC East race. They are only one game behind the Patriots. The Bills have three winnable games left on the schedule.
While the AFC is wide open, the NFC is full of Super Bowl contenders. The Rams, Lions, Packers, Eagles, and Seahawks are legitimate threats to win the Super Bowl this year if they get into the playoffs. The Cowboys’ offense would be scary to face in a playoff game. The Bears are an exciting team that can mix things up in the playoffs. The Buccaneers have struggled, but anything is possible. That side of the bracket is going to be full of exciting games.
Philip Rivers came out of retirement at 44 years old to play for the Indianapolis Colts, and he didn’t play nearly as badly as expected. He wasn’t a prime version of himself, but he gave the Colts a chance to win the game. Rivers led them down the field for a field goal to take the lead with two minutes left in the game, but his defense let him down. The Seattle Seahawks spoiled his return with a game-winning field goal, but Rivers did his job.
As the final three weeks of the NFL season unfold, more things will fall into place until the good teams and the bad teams are separated. Week 16 is full of divisional games and make-or-break scenarios for could-be playoff teams. With everything on the line, it’s up to the NFL’s best to make it happen, or take an early trip to Cancun. Some teams are getting hot at the right time, while others are watching their season fall apart.
