While the New York Jets earned their first win of the season via a come-from-behind 39-38 victory at the Cincinnati Bengals this past Sunday, most expect the Jets will be sellers before the trade deadline arrives on Nov. 4.
Linebacker Quincy Williams is among the Jets players who have been linked with other clubs throughout October. During a recent chat with Al Iannazzone of Newsday, Williams addressed his uncertain future amid the Jets' Week 9 bye.
"I can’t control it," Williams explained about his mindset. "If I get that call and they’re like, 'Hey, you’re going somewhere,' I’ll be like, 'Hey, I love y'all, appreciate everything. I'm going to go ball, but it's going to be hell when you play me.' It's kind of like one of them things, like, I'm prepared. I want to be a Jet. So it's up to them."
On Wednesday, Jets reporter Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic shared why it's "likely" Williams is available to other clubs this fall.
"The Jets just paid Jamien Sherwood $45M over three years, and Williams will likely seek (and deserves) a similar payday," Rosenblatt wrote. "It’s unlikely the Jets would pay two linebackers that much money, and if the Jets are active in free agency, it’s unlikely they’ll get a compensatory draft pick if Williams signs with another team anyway."
Williams, 29, is in the final year of his contract.
Numerous reporters have mentioned that a San Francisco 49ers team that lost linebacker Fred Warner to a dislocated and broken ankle earlier this month could call the Jets about Williams' services. Williams previously played under 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh when Saleh was the Jets' head coach.
For what it's worth, Rosenblatt thinks the Jets could get a fourth- or fifth-round draft pick from the Niners in return for Williams.
"I hear all the outside noise stuff, but I can't really focus on that," Williams added. "So I just make sure my play is good, then make sure I'm healthy, controlling what I can control. And then if they decide that my use on this team is not good or they can replace it, then I'm cool, and I'll be ready for the next place."
