Why Jets' Harrison Phillips believed in Aaron Glenn amid winless start to season

Current New York Jets defensive tackle Harrison Phillips previously played under Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott and Kevin O'Connell of the Minnesota Vikings.

On Sunday afternoon, Phillips and the rest of the Jets earned their first win of the season when the club notched a come-from-behind 39-38 victory at the Cincinnati Bengals. Following that result, Phillips spoke with NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated about why he never lost faith in first-year head coach Aaron Glenn despite the Jets' 0-7 start to the campaign.

Aaron Glenn is creating a culture amid first season with Jets

"I believe in AG," Phillips explained. "I’ve been around Sean when he was young; I was around KO when he was young in his career. [Glenn] possesses those same traits. And there hasn’t been success here for a long time. It takes a while to do that. That’s why when we are creating this culture, it’s about getting the right people, it’s about developing the right people, and you want a culture that elevates your talent, not a culture that hinders your talent. That’s what we’re creating."

It's worth noting that the Jets have been competitive throughout the season despite a lack of wins. In Week 1, Chris Boswell of the Pittsburgh Steelers kicked a 60-yard field goal late in regulation that propelled Pittsburgh to a 34-32 victory over Gang Green. In Week 3, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earned a win over the Jets via a walk-off field goal.

Three of the Jets' other losses were one-score affairs.

"If you think about how close it really is, you go change one play from a couple of the games we had, we’re a 5–2 football team, or a 6–1 football team, if you could go back and change it," Phillips told Breer.

Aaron Glenn has given Jets players an "incredible" belief

At Cincinnati's Paycor Stadium, the Jets scored 23 fourth-quarter points against what may be the league's worst defense as part of erasing what was a 14-point deficit with under 10 minutes left to play.

"It’s tough when you haven’t seen the result you wanted, but all the time the belief is there," Phillips added. "To have an 0–7 team have that belief is incredible. And that’s the culture AG’s trying to build here."

The Jets now get to enjoy their bye week before they begin preparing to host the Cleveland Browns (2-6) on Nov. 9. Cleveland will also spend Week 9 on the bye.
