Quinnen Williams Calls Out Cowboys’ Biggest Defensive Problem

The Dallas Cowboys have nine games remaining to turn their season around, but their defensive struggles continue to prevent them from reaching their potential. After blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead in Sunday’s 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Dallas is searching for answers.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams believes the solution starts with one simple word: execution.

Quinnen Williams identifies Cowboys’ biggest defensive problem

Dallas showed what its defense could accomplish during the first half against Arizona, holding the Cardinals to just three points. However, the Cowboys couldn’t maintain that performance after halftime, surrendering four consecutive touchdown drives before losing in overtime.

For Williams, the problem isn’t necessarily a lack of talent. It’s the defense’s inability to consistently execute its assignments.

“I think the biggest thing is execute,” Williams said. “We gotta execute. We haven’t been executing this whole season. We executed for three quarters, and didn’t execute that last quarter, and the film says it all. I think the biggest thing we’ve got to focus on is execute, and continue to stack days. At the end of the day, we’ve got to execute.”

Williams also took responsibility for the unit’s shortcomings, acknowledging that the defense has played a significant role in Dallas’ disappointing results.

“It’ll tell you that we’re beating ourselves as a defense,” Williams said. “We’re the problem. We’re the reason why we’re losing these games. If we execute, then we can be the reason why we win.”

Cowboys defensive tackle wants actions to match words

Despite the team’s struggles, Williams believes Dallas has enough leadership and experience in the locker room to get things back on track.

The Cowboys have a combination of veteran defenders and young contributors who understand what successful football looks like. However, Williams made it clear that simply talking about improving won’t fix the team’s problems.

“We’ve got a great group of guys in the locker room, we’ve got a great group of leaders, we’ve got a great group of guys on defense, young guys and old guys, who know how to win, who know how to execute and know how it’s supposed to look when we execute,” Williams said. “It’s one of those situations where we can’t just talk about it, we got to go out there and do it, and the actions have to be louder than words.”

Williams has been one of Dallas’ most productive defensive players recently, recording four sacks, seven tackles for loss and 14 tackles over the last three games. Still, individual production means little if the entire defense cannot perform consistently.

Quinnen Williams focused on turning Cowboys season around

Dallas has little time to waste with a 3-5 record and nine regular-season games remaining. The Cowboys travel to face the Indianapolis Colts next, giving the defense another opportunity to show progress.

Williams isn’t interested in focusing on Indianapolis’ roster changes or what other teams are doing. Instead, he wants Dallas to concentrate on improving its own performance every day.

“I think the biggest thing is just focus on today,” Williams said. “Focus on executing today outside at practice, focus on executing in the meetings as we go through, focus on the communication and executing tomorrow, and attack each and every day.”

Williams understands that the Cowboys still have time to change the direction of their season. But the defense must translate its message into results, starting with Sunday’s matchup against Indianapolis.

“We’ve got to execute,” Williams said. “That’s the number one thing. No matter what they’re doing, no matter what no team in the NFL is doing, the Dallas Cowboys defense has got to execute.”
