The Las Vegas Raiders stunningly released star defensive tackle Christian Wilkins last week and voided the remaining $35.2 million guaranteed on his contract. The team cited a disagreement about his foot rehab as the deciding factor in parting ways.
However, reports have been piling in this week about an alleged incident with a teammate that may have also had to do with his release. Ari Meirov of the NFL Spotlight Podcast may have revealed which player was involved in the incident with Wilkins.
"Around league circles, it’s pretty well known that whatever happened with Christian Wilkins, the other player involved has been Adam Butler. That’s been known around the NFL," Meirov said.
None of this has been confirmed yet, as ESPN's Adam Schefter and Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio have shared conflicting stories on the matter. However, Butler made some interesting but important comments on the situation during a press conference on Tuesday.
“We’ve pretty much just kind of moved on from the situation,” Butler said. “I really don’t want to comment further on it. But I will say whatever you’re going through as a person, athlete, non-athlete, whoever, whatever your struggle is, if you got something going on in life, talk to somebody. Get some therapy, whatever your deal is, it’s your deal.”
While these comments are not an admission that he was involved, they are certainly fascinating given the context.
Wilkins signed a four-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2024 offseason that was worth up to $110 million. He and his agent will now be filing a grievance with the NFLPA in an attempt to recoup the guaranteed money that was voided.
Last season, he played in just five games for the Silver and Black, recording 2.0 sacks and 17 total tackles before missing the rest of the season with a broken foot. He never returned to the team's offseason program under Pete Carroll in 2025.
