The Las Vegas Raiders continue to make life easier for rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza.
Right after drafting the former Indiana Hoosiers star, general manager John Spytek added yet another national champion to the mix. The Raiders placed WR Justin Shorter on injured reserve, mostly a special teamer, to make room for undrafted free agent Jonathan Brady. Per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, he's now the fourth Indiana player to join the program this offseason.
"The Raiders announced that they have signed wide receiver Jonathan Brady on Monday. They also signed running back Roman Hemby and wide receiver E.J. Williams Jr. as undrafted free agents last week, so there’s now a quartet of Hoosiers on the roster in Las Vegas," Alper wrote.
Brady spent his final collegiate season with the Hoosiers after stints at New Mexico State and Cal. He wasn't much of a factor, though, hauling in just 14 receptions for 115 yards and three scores for Curt Cignetti's team, adding 16.5 yards on punt returns.
The Raiders are doing the right thing by ensuring the face of the franchise has familiar faces and a friendly environment to grow and flourish as he transitions to the pros. He knows he still has plenty of work to do to adjust to life in the National Football League, to the point where he won't even attend the Hoosiers' White House trip to stay in Las Vegas and work out.
Kirk Cousins will likely be the starter to begin the season and maybe for the entire year. However, Mendoza is clearly the future of the organization. As such, the Raiders must do everything in their power to help him achieve his true potential.
