Raiders' Chandler Jones absent at practice after blasting HC and GM on Instagram

After Chandler Jones deleted an Instagram story directed at Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, the defensive end missed practice on Wednesday.

"It's a personal situation and a private matter," McDaniels said of Jones' absence during a Wednesday news conference. "We have dealt with it, and I'm not going to talk about it."

The HC indicated his status for the season-opener against the Broncos on Sunday remains unclear.

On Tuesday, Jones skewered McDaniels and Ziegler after he claimed the organization isn't letting him work out at its facility. "I don't wanna play if that's my HC or GM ... I want [defensive coordinator] Parick Graham," he wrote, per CBS Sports' Jordan Dajani.

While speculative, it's fair to wonder about Jones' future with the team. Last season, the four-time Pro Bowler underwhelmed after signing a three-year, $51M deal with Las Vegas. In 15 games, the 33-year-old recorded 4.5 sacks, the second-lowest figure in his career.

The Raiders drafted DE Tyree Wilson with the seventh overall pick as a potential replacement. Even though he missed most of training camp and the preseason with a foot injury, McDaniels complimented the rookie's progress.

"He's worked through this whole spring and summer on schedule with what we've been asking to do," the HC said. "This week, we'll be another week we push forward. I think he's done a tremendous job of trying to follow the plan. He'll be ready to go."

The Raiders can't release Jones. His 2023 salary is guaranteed, including an $8.5M roster bonus, per Spotrac. However, Las Vegas could place him on the trading block. The Super Bowl champion might attract suitors as he's third in sacks (112) among active players.

Regardless, it will be difficult for Jones to make amends, and it's unlikely that he'll suit up in Denver.
