Raiders clear major hurdle by agreeing to reworked deal with All-Pro

The Raiders finally got out of their own way on Saturday, agreeing to a one-year deal worth up to $12 million for 2022 leading rusher Josh Jacobs.

Las Vegas was in danger of losing Jacobs to a holdout by not getting a deal done but was able to avoid that worst-case scenario.

Three-time All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams discussed Jacobs' importance to the Raiders earlier this offseason.

"If we really want a shot at winning the Super Bowl and having all the elite aspirations that we do, we're gonna need that guy," Adams said last month on "NFL Total Access" (via NFL.com's Coral Smith).

Last season, Jacobs led the league with 1,653 rushing yards. Per NFL Next Gen Stats, he gained 158 rushing yards over expected (RYOE), the fifth-most RYOE among running backs.

Jacobs tweeted his pleasure with the deal, which is an increase from the $10.091 million franchise tag he was tendered in July.

The Raiders are in a weird place in the AFC. They don't appear to be a significant threat for a playoff spot, but Jacobs and Adams give them two of the best players at their respective positions in the NFL.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, when healthy, is a proven winner and is playing in a system under head coach Josh McDaniels that he's familiar with dating back to their time together in New England.

Former Las Vegas quarterback Derek Carr's struggles last season partly stemmed from learning McDaniels' system, and those problems shouldn't arise under Garoppolo.

Whether it all amounts to anything more than the team's 6-11 record last season is a question for the regular season to answer. For the Raiders, it's much better to wonder about that than Jacobs' future.
