Raiders defense called into question on multiple fronts

Despite the Las Vegas Raiders enjoying a strong offseason, some analysts have presented one potential caveat: the defense.

The defensive line looks to be fine, albeit relying on better health from the likes of Maxx Crosby, Christian Wilkins and Malcolm Koonce. Where things begin to look dicey is further back, as the Raiders lost several starters to free agency and looked for cheaper replacements. As such, the unit could be in trouble if the pass rush cannot put consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

It has lead to several analysts becoming convinced that the Raiders are not finished making moves on the defensive side of the ball.

Some free agents remain that could shore up any remaining weaknesses the Raiders still have.

When discussing what remains for teams to do in the closing stages of the offseason, Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker echoed the concerns some have on the Raiders.

“The Raiders can lay claim to being one of the NFL’s most-improved teams this offseason, fueled by trading for Geno Smith (81.9 PFF passing grade) and a tremendous draft. Still, more questions loom for a defense that finished 32nd in PFF coverage grade a year ago,” Locker wrote.

“Las Vegas’ cornerback room is troubling, to say the least, even after signing Eric Stokes (62.4 PFF coverage grade) and drafting Darien Porter (90.1 PFF coverage grade) in the third round. Linebacker also carries worries, with only Elandon Roberts (79.7 PFF overall grade) having played more than 200 snaps last year. The Raiders would benefit greatly from signing players such as Rasul Douglas, Asante Samuel Jr. or Eric Kendricks as they seek talent at those positions.”

While the Raiders could look internally for options such as the returning linebacker Jaylon Smith or undrafted cornerback Mello Dotson, it is a risky strategy to rely on those options as the sole solution.

Douglas and Samuel have recent history of strong play, which is reassuring for a Raiders team lacking a true top cornerback. Meanwhile, Kendricks is a veteran linebacker who would shore up the middle of the defense. While those are not the only options the Raiders have in play, it is rare for starting-caliber players to still be on the market this deep into the offseason.

The Raiders might wait to see what they have with their current players, but do not be surprised if another addition or two gets brought into the picture.
