Raiders leaning toward huge QB switch for Week 9 vs. Giants

Soon after it was announced that the Las Vegas Raiders had fired Josh McDaniels and David Ziegler as head coach and general manager respectively, it was reported that the team is considering making a quarterback switch for the Week 9 contest against the New York Giants.

Jimmy Garoppolo signed a three-year, $67.5 million contract with Las Vegas in March but has been a bust.

After suiting up for the first three games of the 2023 season, leading the Raiders to a 1-2 start and tossing five touchdown passes and six interceptions, the 31-year-old signal-caller missed the team's Week 4 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers. Garoppolo returned for Weeks 5 and 6 against the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots (both wins), but then sat out during the group's Week 7 loss vs. the Chicago Bears due to a back injury.

He came back for Week 8's "Monday Night Football" contest as Las Vegas visited the Detroit Lions, but had his worst performance of the year, finishing 10-for-21 for 126 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception. Garoppolo posted season lows in completions, completion percentage (47.6), passing yards and quarterback rating (46.9) while failing to throw a touchdown pass for the first time this year and being sacked a season high six times for 49 yards in the 26-14 loss.

Through six games this season, Jimmy G. has the worst completion percentage (65.5) of his career since he became a full-time starter in 2019 and has a career low 78.1 quarterback rating. Garoppolo leads the NFL with nine interceptions as well.

The Raiders used one of their fourth-round picks during the 2023 NFL Draft on Aidan O'Connell out of Purdue.

The 25-year-old started the team's Week 4 loss to the Chargers, going 24-for-39 for 238 passing yards, no touchdowns and one interception while being sacked seven times for 50 yards. O'Connell added three carries for three yards and one touchdown, but in addition to the interception, he fumbled three times, losing two of them.

The former Boilermaker was 10-for-13 for 75 yards in relief of veteran Brian Hoyer during the Week 7 defeat against the Bears, tossing his first career touchdown pass along with one interception.
