Raiders OC Chip Kelly's comments on Raheem Mostert raise serious questions about his lack of early-season usage

The Las Vegas Raiders' run game has struggled. On Sunday against the Chicago Bears, they played their best in that area, including a big game from Raheem Mostert, which the team wasn't surprised about, apparently, according to OC Chip Kelly.

"Yeah, a lot of the active part in all of the NFL, if you're not the starter, and obviously Ashton [Jeanty] is a starter, revolves around special teams. So, where did they need him? And I know T-Mac [Tom McMahon] used him on teams, so that makes him active on game day," Kelly said of Mostert. "But I think he's got a wealth of experience, he had double-digit touchdowns just two years ago in this league, and he's seen a lot of things and done a lot of things.

"So, I think he's got a really good understanding of the scheme; he's got a really good understanding of how to run the football in the National Football League. And didn't surprise us, the guys that have been around him, and it doesn't surprise anybody that's seen him in the league, what he can do when he has the ball in his hands. So, I was excited that we had a chance to keep him active, and he's going to be active again this week, and that's a pretty good one-two punch with him and Ashton."

Chip Kelly's lack of early-season usage is questionable

The question now stands after these comments – if the run game was so bad for three weeks, and Mostert was inactive, a healthy scratch, for those three weeks, and you aren't surprised he played that well, why didn't you play him? See, that doesn't make much sense, because the first three weeks of the season, the Raiders had maybe the worst run game in the league.

After the first two weeks, at least, when you see that the run game is very bad, why wouldn't you try something against a bad Washington Commanders defense, if you're not surprised by how well Mostert played? Not playing Mostert and playing guys like Zamir White and Dylan Laube over him just comes off as a bad coaching decision.

Then again, maybe that's a coaching decision made by RB coach Deland McCullough, and not Chip Kelly. Whoever made that decision, it feels like it wasn't a smart one, considering Kelly is calling Jeanty and Mostert a good one-two punch. How can they be a one-two punch when you haven't even dressed one of them out for three games? Why would you not want to use more RBs to potentially save some wear and tear on Jeanty?

At least the Raiders are going to dress him vs. the Indianapolis Colts.
