The Las Vegas Raiders continued their front-office rebuild with another significant change.
Following a 4-13 season, the Raiders hired general manager John Spytek to replace Tom Telesco. They also fired head coach Antonio Pierce after one season and landed former Super Bowl and national champion Pete Carroll.
Spytek reportedly lost a key member of his new regime. According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Raiders and assistant general manager Champ Kelly "mutually agreed to part ways."
Kelly joined the Raiders in 2022 after 14 years in the NFL. He worked as a scout and assistant director of pro personnel for the Denver Broncos before going to the Chicago Bears as a director of pro scouting and assistant director of player personnel.
A former National Indoor Football League wide receiver, Kelly briefly worked as the Lexington Horsemen's general manager and wide receivers coach.
During the 2023 season, Kelly served as interim general manager when the Raiders fired Dave Ziegler. Ziegler, who hired Kelly the prior year, is now an assistant GM for the Tennessee Titans.
An organization that's made the playoffs twice in the last two decades hopes to turn a corner under new leadership. Now a minority owner, Tom Brady appears to hold sway behind the scenes.
The Raiders entered the 2024 season with Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew at quarterback. After finishing 29th in scoring, they're expected to pursue a new signal-caller this offseason.
Las Vegas holds the No. 6 pick in this year's draft, leading to speculation of drafting Colorado Buffaloes star Shedeur Sanders.
Meanwhile, Kelly will explore other job opportunities. He's conducted multiple interviews for GM positions over the years, mostly recently interviewing for the Jacksonville Jaguars vacancy.
