Raiders sign former John Spytek draft pick

The Las Vegas Raiders are undergoing a near-total shift in their linebacker corps.

The departures of Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo left a significant void in the middle of the Raiders defense. The team did sign Elandon Roberts from the Pittsburgh Steelers, but that was only one of two spots. The Raiders tried to make a move by signing linebacker Christian Elliss to an offer sheet, but the New England Patriots matching the offer left them scrambling for an alternative.

They found that option on Friday, one that general manager John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady are quite familiar with.

The Raiders have agreed to sign linebacker Devin White.

According to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, the Raiders have signed the veteran linebacker to a one-year deal.

White brings with him significant ties to the Raiders organization, being drafted by Spytek and teammates with Brady from their shared time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The fifth overall pick in the 2019 Draft, White was a Super Bowl champion and one-time Pro Bowler with the Buccaneers. However, his time in Tampa Bay ended tumultuously after a failed trade request and being benched at the end of the 2023 season. Last season, White played seven games with the Houston Texans, racking up 19 tackles.

Throughout his career, White has racked up 585 tackles, 40 tackles for loss, and 23 sacks. He also has a history of making key plays, with six forced fumbles and three interceptions also to his credit. Regardless of if the Raiders signed him as a starter alongside Roberts or as a reserve, they did well to bring in someone with pedigree and a good statistical profile.

Spytek brought in someone he knows to help his new team, and he hopes that this low-risk gamble helps transform the Raiders defense for the better.
