Rams may still add another quarterback

The Los Angeles Rams might be committed to loading up on quarterbacks this offseason.

The Rams drafted Ty Simpson at No. 13 overall as their quarterback of the future on Thursday in the NFL Draft, but they may not be done. Coach Sean McVay refused to completely shut the door on the potential return of Jimmy Garoppolo in a backup role to Matthew Stafford.

“I don’t want to say completely closed, but I would say this. You guys know how much I appreciate Jimmy and what he could really do. I always viewed him as a starting-caliber quarterback,” McVay said, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “I wouldn’t say he’d ever close it, but by being able to do what we did last night, it probably lessens the level of urgency for that position. I certainly would never say never in anything like that.”

The Rams have essentially confirmed that Garoppolo is contemplating retirement, which may have played at least a small role in the Simpson pick. The team is still hopeful that he will reconsider, even though, as McVay alluded to, their backup situation is more settled now.

If Garoppolo did come back to the Rams, Simpson would wind up third on the depth chart. That shows just how serious the Rams are about letting him develop instead of throwing him into game action.
