Rams, running back Cam Akers appear to be on the outs again

Trying to decipher Cam Akers’s standing with the Los Angeles Rams just may give you a headache.

The 24-year-old running back appears to be on his way out of L.A. after he was deactivated for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers — a move the former second-round pick admitted took him by surprise.

Akers, who averaged just 1.3 yards per rush in Week 1 on 22 carries, was not listed on the Rams injury report ahead of the game. Los Angeles named second-year back Kyren Williams the starter this week, per ESPN. The 23-year-old rushed for 52 yards and two touchdowns last week.

NFL insider Jay Glazer reported on “Fox NFL Sunday” that Los Angeles was exploring trade options for Akers, marking the second time in as many seasons the team has looked to trade him.

If Akers is truly available, several teams including the Baltimore Ravens, who lost starting RB J.K. Dobbins for the year with an Achilles injury, the Indianapolis Colts, who may need to replace Jonathan Taylor in a few weeks, the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins all could be interested in acquiring him.

Akers missed three weeks last season from Oct. 16 through Nov. 6 for what the team described as “personal reasons.” He was reportedly unhappy with his role on the team and L.A. was fielding trade calls for him during that time.

The Florida State alum ended the season with a career-high 786 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, rushing for over 100 yards in the final three games of the year.
