The Los Angeles Rams snatched defeat from the jaws of victory en route to falling to 2-1 on the season via Sunday's 33-26 loss at the Philadelphia Eagles (3-0).
Following that result, Rams linebacker Jared Verse spoke with Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com about how the visitors squandered a 26-7 advantage they held in the third quarter of the Week 3 contest.
"We had that game won," Verse directly said. "I don’t think there is any hump. I don’t think it’s anything like that. I think we just got too into ourselves and thought the game was won. We started getting outside of ourselves. People started trying to make plays. I’ll take the blame too. There were a couple of plays that I could have been better. I could have maybe stopped a first down. We just all have to be better and we’re going to be good."
Much was made throughout last week about the struggles of the Philadelphia passing attack over the club's first two games of the campaign. Thus, individuals associated with the Rams likely would've felt confident about the team's chances of getting to 3-0 had they been promised on Sunday morning that Los Angeles would hold Eagles star running back and reigning Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley to just 46 rushing yards on 18 carries.
According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell, the Rams had a 94.4 percent chance of winning with 2:30 to go in the third quarter of Sunday's matchup. However, Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts tossed three second-half touchdown passes, the last of which occurred with 1:48 remaining in regulation. Jordan Davis then sealed the comeback win with a blocked field goal returned for a 61-yard touchdown as time expired.
After what occurred at Lincoln Financial Field, DraftKings Sportsbook had the Rams tied for sixth at +1000 odds to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LX as of Monday morning. Verse suggested the better team did not win what became arguably the best game of Week 3.
"More games are lost than won," Verse added during his postgame comments. "It’s not anything they did. We were eliminating the explosives the whole game. In the second half, we came out, we had a good play and we were able to turn the ball over and score. We were lacking in the sense that it was a little mistake here, and a little mistake there. We just have to be better all around."
The Rams will look to produce a bounce-back performance when they host the 3-0 Indianapolis Colts this coming Sunday. On Monday, ESPN BET had Los Angeles as a 3.5-point home favorite for that game.
