The Los Angeles Rams are facing another test of depth and durability after a heartbreaking 26–23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The defeat not only dropped them to third place in the NFC West but also added another name to their growing injury list — starting linebacker Omar Speights.

Head coach Sean McVay confirmed that Speights suffered a high ankle sprain in the loss to San Francisco. According to Adam Grosbard of the LA Daily News, McVay said the rookie linebacker’s chances of suiting up against the Baltimore Ravens are “more likely doubtful.”
With Speights sidelined, McVay indicated that they are still evaluating their options. “We’ll work through that,” McVay said. “I have a lot of confidence in Troy. We have a lot of confidence in some of the different guys. Obviously, Dolac. We only have four guys on the roster, but Troy is a guy that’s shown that he’s more than capable, as is Shaun Dolac.”
According to Grosbard, “Troy Reeder and Shaun Dolac will split reps at ILB as they figure out who will replace Speights if he can’t go.”

Reeder, a seven-year veteran who has played six seasons with the Rams and one with the Chargers, brings steady experience to a young linebacker corps. He has tallied 316 career tackles, five sacks, and two interceptions. Though primarily a special teams contributor this season, his familiarity with the defensive system and leadership could make him the safer short-term choice.
On the other hand, rookie Shaun Dolac has quickly turned heads since joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Buffalo. Known for his instincts and tackling ability, Dolac was held out of the final preseason game — often a sign that a player has secured a roster spot.
The depth at linebacker has already been tested this year. Fifth-round rookie Chris Paul Jr., once viewed as a “draft steal,” was eventually cut in favor of Dolac during final roster reductions, creating a stir among fans online.
As the Rams prepare for Baltimore, they’re juggling multiple injuries — including tight end Tyler Higbee (hip) and lineman Rob Havenstein (ankle). For now, the defense hinges on Nate Landman’s continued strong play and how effectively the Reeder–Dolac rotation can fill Speights’ void.
With McVay emphasizing competition and flexibility, it’s clear the Rams won’t rush a decision. But with one of the league’s most dynamic offenses up next in the Ravens, Los Angeles needs its next man up to deliver — fast.
